What You Should Know About Dental Bridges

With roughly 178 million Americans missing at least one tooth, dental bridges are a common solution for tooth loss. These restorations use crowns or metal wings and artificial teeth to fill gaps in your smile. Before starting this treatment, we communicate clearly to ensure you understand the following important facts about dental bridges:

They Replace Missing Teeth

Dental bridges are a solution to replace missing teeth, which can occur due to decay, trauma, gum disease, teeth grinding, and genetics. Most are made from a combination of porcelain, metal, ceramic, and composite resin. When determining which material would be best for your bridge, we consider your tooth color, shape, and location to ensure a natural, seamless look.

There Are Four Types

There are four different types of dental bridges, all of which aim to replace missing teeth but work differently. These types include the following:

  • Traditional: Artificial teeth are held in place by two crowns bonded to the natural teeth neighboring the gap.
  • Cantilever: For those with only one natural tooth adjacent to the missing tooth or teeth, artificial teeth are held in place by one crown bonded on the singular natural tooth.
  • Maryland: A metal framework is bonded to the neighboring natural teeth, holding the artificial teeth in place.
  • Implant-Supported: Dental implants — small, metal posts that replace the tooth root — are surgically placed to support the artificial teeth between them.

We determine which type of bridge is right for you based on the number of teeth you are missing, the size of the gap, and the position of your teeth.

They Can Last for Years

Traditional and implant-supported bridges are durable, long-lasting solutions for missing teeth. With the proper care and regular professional cleanings, your dental bridge can last up to 15 years. Dental implants can last a lifetime. We provide clear instruction for dental bridge care, so you can easily maintain it after the treatment.

They Require Multiple Appointments

Dental bridge treatment typically requires at least two office visits to complete. During your first visit, we prepare the teeth by removing a small portion of enamel to ensure the crowns fit comfortably. If you get an implant-supported bridge, we will perform the procedure to place the implants in the jawbone. Then, we take dental impressions to use as a model for your bridge.

We provide a temporary restoration while you wait for the final bridge to be completed. Once your final bridge is complete, we will schedule your second visit. During this visit, we will remove the temporary restoration, clean your teeth, check the bridge’s fit, and bond it to your teeth or implants.

You Can Care for Them Like Your Natural Teeth

With most types of dental bridges, you can care for them like you would your natural teeth. Brushing twice daily, flossing once daily, and getting regular dental cleanings will help maintain your gum health and ensure your bridge lasts. Additionally, avoiding hard foods, tobacco products, and sugary or acidic foods and drinks can help prevent your bridge from breaking and staining while keeping your natural teeth and gums healthy.
